  1. When I got home and heard the news last night, I was glad we had broached the topic of racism, and of how people of color were treated here, in Farmington, as late as 1977.

What I want to ask is what special hell is reserved for whites who help to end racial discrimination? Linda Darling Hammond, in about 2002, wrote more boldly on the subject than she does now. But for me, the work started with a tolerance for linguistic plurality in our classrooms. A lot of teachers hated that idea, and so did Bill Gates, so it was softened considerably.
Taking the long view is probably best, cultivating patience and keeping in mind that racism, sexism, agism, any form of discrimination serves the oppressors, and they always win. It is our acts of dignity, integrity, tolerance and empathy that allow us to win, bit by bit.

  2. Talk about crappy rough drafts! I can't see enough in the preview window, and obviously, could use an editor. Should read, by our acts ....that we are allowed to win ...
